History

The Group was formed in October 2000 following an Exploratory Meeting of invited people with an interest in various forms of transport. The regular meetings commenced in January 2001 with talks, initially given by members sharing their transport interests and knowledge.

It was soon recognised that we would need to broaden our horizons by inviting outside speakers to address us on specialist subjects and over the years we have been given some really interesting presentations.

Some of those interesting talks have included the now defunct APT, Concorde, talks by the daughter of a member who is an Airline Pilot and her Air Traffic Controller husband, pier railways, trams in various locations in the West of England, the Falkirk Wheel and the Severn Railway Bridge Disaster, to name but a few. We have visited the Anderton Boat Lift, been on evening Mystery Tours, celebrated our 10th Anniversary with a boat trip on the Kennet and Avon Canal and toured the Morgan car works at Malvern, along with visits to other locations of interest.

The numbers attending have gradually increased through articles written in the local newspaper and elsewhere and members inviting their friends. Today, the group numbers around thirty in membership but we are always looking to grow.

Many of our members have transport interests outside the Group, such as model railways, photography, collecting transport artefacts and memorabilia, model making and exhibiting at vintage shows.

We have never found it necessary to have a committee, so it has been organised by the founder since its inception. If you have knowledge, or know anyone who has, on any transport subject Vincent would grateful if you could contact him via email: speedster@wvtig.org.uk or tel: Ross-on-Wye (01989) 564726
